This beautiful kangaroo paw species is deservedly the floral emblem of Western Australia, which is home to this uniquely Australian species. It has a vivid combination of bright green flowers atop bright red stems, all clothed in a velvety soft haired texture. It flowers from late winter through to summer. It prefers a sandy well drained soil, it performs well in large pots as well.
It grows as a perennial plant with flowering stems to a metre high, but can be short lived in times of high rainfall or humidity. Growing in raised beds or large pots in areas where this is likely to affect them will help extend their growing life. The plant has an underground rhizome which helps store food for times of stress such as drought. Flowering takes energy from the plant, so fertilise and water in late winter as the weather warms, which will help bud formation.
